Email works by writing up a message and sending to a certain user on a mail server like hotmail where it waits until the client picks it up. To be able to send an email you need an internet connection and a email server and client like hotmail which is browser based email service.
As you can see above I am composing a email and sending to multiple Gmail users and myself.
This is done by typing emails into the CC and BCC boxes this allows your email to be sent to other users which comes in handy if you need to send out invitations or notifications to many people.

To the right you can see a diagram explaining how a email is sent trough the internet. As you can see it is more complicated than it is, a email has to be sent to at least 4 ports until it arrives to the person the email is going to.
